Virginia Wesleyan blanks St. Mary's (Md.), caps first perfect regular season
ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- After recording a milestone victory for head coach Jeff Bowers in its previous match, Virginia Wesleyan made history once again on Wednesday. The 2-0 win on the road against St. Mary's (Md.) in the regular-season finale, the Marlins became the first VWC team in the program's 29-year history to post an undefeated regular season record.
The victory improved VWC's record to 17-0-1, topping three previous seasons of just two losses each in 2003, 2005 and 2007.
Previously, the Marlins had solidified their victory of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in a 4-1 win against Roanoke last Saturday. The win marked the 200th career win for Bowers.
On Wednesday, St. Mary's (5-9-1) did not makie the undefeated feat come easy for Virginia Wesleyan. The Marlins were held scoreless throughout the first half.

In the 54th minute, it was Edelman's turn to hit the net, scoring off an assist from senior Breanne Ingargiola to give VWC a 2-0 lead.
Virginia Wesleyan outshot St. Mary's 9-0 in the first half and finished with a 19-2 advantage in shots. The Marlins also tallied a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks, including 7-0 in the second half.
