TURLOCK, Calif. — Karenee Demery scored a game-winning goal two minutes into overtime to lead No. 8 Cal State Stanislaus to a 4-3 win against Chico State. The goal capped a hat trick for Demery and bumps her season total to a nation-leading 18 goals.
Cal State Stanislaus moved into first place in the CCAA North standings heading into this Sunday’s regular-season finale showdown with Sonoma State (14-2-1, 10-2-1 CCAA).
In front of the Cal State Stanislaus bench, Demery blocked a Chico State pass, took possession and got herself in a one-on-one situation. Demery dribbled more than half the field to the far side and blasted a shot from 14 yards out to the near post for the victory at 92:14.
The Warriors improved to 15-2 overall (11-2 in the CCAA) to equal a program best for wins in a season. Chico State fell to 6-11 and 4-10 in the CCAA.
For two-time All-American Demery, it was her fourth hat trick of her career and the third time she’s scored three goals in a match this season. Demery also netted three goals against Chico State last November in the CCAA Championship game.
Demery now has 53 career goals with 24 game-winners and leads the CCAA with 18 scores this season.
Demery opened the scoring for Stanislaus in the third minute. She sent a shot in as the ball deflected off the hands of Chico goalkeeper Brianna Furner and defenders for the score.
Chico State answered with two goals in the 14th and 19th minutes to take a 2-1 lead at intermission.
Coming out of the halftime break, the Warriors tied it up just 37 seconds in when Karli Nestler blasted a free kick from 40 yards out through the hands of Furner.
The scoring continued when Bernie Bettencourt fed Demery a pass as she finished it off behind Furner to make it 3-2. Chico State answered back 10 minutes later on a Scotie Walker goal, sending the game to overtime.
