Wheaton (Ill.) eases by Webster to advance to second round
WHEATON, Ill. – Wheaton (Ill.) opened the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Tournament on Friday with a 4-0 victory against Webster at Joe Bean Stadium on the Wheaton campus. Wheaton (16-3-2) advances to the second round on Saturday. Webster closes the season with a 16-6-0 record.
Wheaton sophomore Sarah Guidera sparked Wheaton’s scoring with a goal from about five yards away from the net in the 10th minute. Guidera’s goal was assisted by Thunder sophomore Anna Seabolt and junior Leah DeMoss. Freshman Ally Witt extended Wheaton’s lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 30th minute that was assisted by Guidera and Sydney Sharkey. The Thunder led the Gorlocks 2-0 at halftime.
DeMoss increased the hosts’ lead to 3-0 early in the second half when she blasted in a shot from six yards out that was assisted by Seabolt in the 49th minute. Witt netted her second goal of the match in the 86th minute as she marched through the Webster defense to cap the 4-0 victory.
Wheaton out-shot Webster 26-8 on the day with the Thunder holding a 15-1 advantage in shots on goal. Webster goalkeeper Jessica Davis made 11 saves, with four goals allowed. Thunder netminder Kelsey Graham stopped one Webster shot to guide the Wheaton shutout.
