Wheaton (Mass.) edges Westfield State 1-0 in overtime to move ahead

NORTON, Mass. — Wheaton (Mass.) freshman forward Cat Amick deposited the game-winning goal just 13 seconds into the first overtime session to send the Lyons to the second round of the NCAA tournament with a 1-0 victory against Westfield State on Saturday afternoon at Christina Mirrione, ’99 Stadium.

Wheaton, ranked 25th in the latest NSCAA national rankings, improves to 17-1-6 overall. Westfield State concludes its record-setting season at 18-1-1 overall. The Owls notched program highwater marks in wins (18), shutouts (13) and compiled its longest winning streak in program history of 14 games before Saturday’s loss.

Amick notched her tenth goal of the season and first-career game-winner with a low shot under the dive of Owls junior goalkeeper Jess Habif a few yards outside of the box in the 91st minute.

Senior forward Cassey Muse set up the game-winning marker after intercepting a Westfield State pass off the opening kickoff in the first overtime.

Lyons freshman goalkeeper Taylor Wilson recorded her third shutout of the season making a game-high six saves. Habif stopped two shots in the loss.

Westfield State outshot Wheaton 15-8 in the contest and won the corners matchup 5-0.

The Lyons have played in three-consecutive overtime contests and nine overall this season posting a 3-0-6 mark during that stretch.
