Wi's goal in double overtime lifts UC-San Diego past Seattle Pacific
LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Jessica Wi's goal in double overtime pushed UC-San Diego past Seattle Pacific 2-1 in an NCAA tournament second round match at Triton Soccer Stadium on Saturday.
The Tritons, seeded second in the West Regional, improved to 15-2-3. The third-seeded Falcons, who knocked out No. 6-seeded BYU-Hawaii through a 1-0 victory in La Jolla on Thursday, completed its season at 15-4-2.
Just over three minutes into the second of two 10-minute, sudden-victory overtime periods, Hayley Johnson lofted a corner kick from the right side that found its way to the far post, with fellow senior Wi able to place her effort across the goal mouth and into the netting on the opposite side. It was Wi's fourth goal of the season and second of the game-winning variety.
Gabi Hernandez opened the scoring in the 19th minute off another Johnson corner kick, shooting home from close range for her eighth goal of the season.
Seattle Pacific equalized with a goal from its leading scorer, Megan Lindsay, at 32:50, as the senior forward pounced on the rebound from a long-distance Annie Thomas shot that Triton goalkeeper Kelcie Brodsky initially saved. Lindsay's shot from a tight angle from the left side found the target for her 12th of the season.
Brodsky concluded the match with four saves for UCSD, while Natalie Harold wound up with three stops for SPU.
