Bartlinski wins 200th as West Florida tips Tampa to advance
PENSACOLA, Fla. – Sashana Campbell and Shelby Bush each scored a goal, Chelsea Palmer recorded a pair of assists and West Florida coach Joe Bartlinski won his 200th game as the No. 2 Argonauts defeated No. 21 Tampa 2-0 Friday at the UWF Soccer Complex.
UWF won a third-round match to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Tournament for the third time in school history, both coming under Bartlinski’s tutelage. UWF is 2-0 in quarterfinals matches.
The Argos got on the board early when Campbell hooked up with Palmer on a give-and-go to set up a one-on-one matchup with Campbell and the Spartans’ keeper. Campbell shot past a diving keeper at the 4:11 mark to put UWF up 1-0.
After taking the lead, UWF played with a defensive strategy for the majority of the game.
UWF was able to add some insurance in the 71st minute, when Palmer sent a corner kick to Bush. Bush jumped higher than the keeper and shot a header into the back of the net to put UWF up 2-0 with 71:31 on the clock.
Tampa outshot UWF 12-11 and took nine corners to the Argos’ five. But, UWF held on for its 12th shutout of the season.
Sarah Story recorded just three saves in the shutout. She was assisted by strong efforts from Taylor Harbison, who marked Tampa’s top attacker, and Rachel Cutts who played solid defense at center-back.
UWF (21-1) extended its winning streak to 10 and has outscored opponents 35-3 during that streak.
