UCLA records third consecutive postseason shutout, beats SDSU
SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Third-seeded UCLA shut out second-seeded San Diego State 3-0 in the third round of the NCAA tournament in San Diego on Sunday afternoon. Senior forward Zakiya Bywaters, the Pac-12 Player of the Year, scored two early goals to give UCLA a 2-0 advantage, and Chelsea Braun added another goal as the Bruins recorded their third consecutive shutout in the postseason.
Bywaters put UCLA ahead early, taking a pass from Rosie White on the left and firing to the lower left corner from 10 yards out past Aztec goalkeeper Rachel Boaz at 6:52. Bywaters struck again at 12:16, this time scoring from the right side of the field to the far post for her 15th goal of the year. Sarah Killion was credited with the assist on the play.
San Diego State (21-2-1) put up a fight in the second half, trailing 2-0, but the Bruins (18-2-2) had an answer defensively each time the Aztecs threatened. Chelsea Braun put the game away at 64:35 with her first goal of the season. Caprice Dydasco set up the play with a perfect cross into the box, which Braun tapped in from three yards out.
UCLA goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland earned the shutout, her 11th of the season. She had three saves on 10 Aztec shots.
"We're extremely excited with the way the weekend went -- eight goals, not giving up any," said UCLA head coach B.J. Snow. "I think it was such a team effort, from the moment we got here to San Diego on Thursday. The team really embraced going on the road and the challenge of finishing the weekend off to try to get a chance to move on to the next round. I couldn't be happier with the way the girls responded. They really came to compete, they were full of energy, and I thought we scored some tremendous goals over the weekend. I'm really proud of everything. We're going to enjoy this on the way home and get back to work to prepare for next weekend."
"We really did well this weekend just capitalizing and finishing our chances," said Bywaters. "We're on the road and we just want to prove to ourselves that we could come back and bounce back from the last two losses that we had at the end of the season."
The Bruins will next face top-seeded and top-ranked Stanford in the quarterfinals. The Cardinal defeated Denver in the Round of 16, 3-0. The UCLA-Stanford game will take place this weekend at Stanford. Game date/time has yet to be determined.
