ATLANTA -- Third-ranked Washington (Mo.) opened University Athletic Association (UAA) play with a 1-0 win at No. 7 Emory on Sunday afternoon at the Woodruff P.E. Center in Atlanta.

Washington improves its overall record to 9-1, 1-0 in the UAA, while Emory falls to 7-3-1, 0-1 in the UAA. Washington U. and Brandeis University are the lone unbeaten teams in the conference after the first week of play.

An evenly played first half saw the Bears strike first in the 16th minute after senior Kate Doyle headed home a cross from senior Becky Berels to make it 1-0. The goal for Doyle was her fourth of the season, while the assist for Berels was her conference-leading sixth of the year.

Emory outshot Washington U. 15-10 for the game, and had a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. Despite being outshot, the Bears recorded six corner kicks in the win.

Sophomore goalkeeper Amy French made a career-high nine saves, preserving the Bears’ ninth shutout of the season. Washington U. snapped Emory’s program-record tying 27-home match winning streak, the 17th longest streak in NCAA DIII history.
