The freshman pitcher picked up three wins in the circle over the weekend, the only Pac-10 pitcher to do so, in a sweep of then No. 10 Stanford.
“I’m proud to represent the University of Arizona with this special honor. This was a great weekend for us as a team,” said Fowler.
With the wins, Arizona (35-7) maintained a third place ranking in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 poll, also announced today by the ASA. Stanford (30-9) dropped one spot to No. 11.
In the first two games of the series the Tucson, Ariz. native, and two-time Gatorade Player of the Year, tossed two complete game victories. In Game 1, Fowler struck out nine and allowed four hits in a 3-2 win. She followed on Saturday by tossing a two hitter and had plenty of support on the offensive side as the Wildcats won 10-2 in six innings.
“It’s a great honor for her and the team to be recognized by USA Softball. This is a well deserved honor because she’s been good for us all year,” said Arizona Head Coach Mike Candrea. “She’s young, but I think the big thing is that she’s been very stable for us throughout this entire year, and it’s great for her to be recognized.”
In the series finale she entered in relief and gave up just one run in 4.2 innings pitched to earn a 5-4 victory, her third of the weekend On the season, the freshman now holds a 24-5 record.
