UAB Knocks Out Alcorn State, 10-1

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- The UAB softball team downed Alcorn State, 10-1, in NCAA Championship action Saturday afternoon at the Tuscaloosa Regional at the Alabama Softball Complex.
UAB improves to 37-21 and will play Lipscomb Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CT while Alcorn State falls to 24-26 and is eliminated from the regional.
UAB pitcher Alisha Smith (14-13) went the distance for the Blazers, stepping in for starting pitcher Lauren Webster one batter into the first. The Springville, Ala., product fanned seven batters and surrendered just three hits and no earned runs in the win.
Left fielder Caley Walden led UAB at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Shortstop Catherine Douglass went 2-for-2 with three runs and catcher Mandy Lowman went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
The Blazers came out swinging in the first, with Walden, third baseman Cameron Skates and Lowman recording three consecutive hits. Walden scored on Lowman's single while a sacrifice fly by Kayla Orr plated Skates to give UAB the early 2-0 advantage.
UAB added four runs on five hits in the second to take the 6-0 lead. Douglass reached on a bunt to lead off for UAB. A throwing error by Alcorn State catcher Chelsie Dahlbeck plated Douglass, and right fielder Sallie Van Kirk scored on a Walden base hit. Lowman then launched a two-RBI blooper to shallow left field.
The Blazers tacked on another run in the third after Douglass blasted a triple to deep right field and crossed the plate on an infield single by Van Kirk.
Alcorn State starting pitcher Deanna Rancilio (7-7) allowed 12 hits and seven earned runs in four innings of work before Jennie Hatch stepped in. Hatch tossed the final three innings, surrendering three earned runs on two hits.
The Lady Braves tallied their lone run of the game in the sixth after shortstop Jasmine Hubbard reached on a base hit and crossed the plate on an error by Orr.
UAB tallied three more runs in the seventh. With two outs, right fielder Hailey Glynn belted a two-RBI double to left-center. Center fielder Martina Landrum walked before Walden singled to right field to plate Glynn.
