ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - It took nine innings Saturday at Heritage Park, but Bloomsburg kept coach Jan Hutchinson's quest for a second national championship this school year alive with a 2-1 victory over Molloy College in a loser's bracket game.
Hutchinson's Huskies stranded eight base-runners in the game, but Bloomsburg executed a textbook squeeze bunt in the top of the ninth to score the decisive run.
With runners on second and third and one out in the ninth, 4-foot-10 senior right fielder Casey Massimini laid down a bunt and pinch-runner Mandy Leach scored the go-ahead run.
Leach was running for shortstop Mandy Koch, who led off the inning with a walk. Pitcher Shavaun Fisher followed Koch's base-on-balls with a single to center.
Bloomsburg (50-7) went on to play Angelo State in a game Saturday afternoon, while Molloy (43-21) was eliminated.
Fisher was also a rock inside the circle for the Huskies, striking out eight and walking two in a complete-game five-hitter.
Molloy pitcher Megan Butterworth allowed five hits and two earned runs before a blister got the best of her pitching hand in the decisive ninth inning.
Bloomsburg loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fourth but got just one run to show for it. Shen Debaro drew a two-out, RBI-walk to score Danielle Lazorka, who had led off with an infield single.
Molloy tied it at 1 in the bottom of the sixth when Jeana Frey stroked a one-out single and scored from second on a Carla Campagna base hit.
