NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport University, under the direction of eighth-year head coach Keith Parr, was picked to win the USA South Athletic Conference 2011 softball title in the preseason coaches' poll. The Captains captured their second consecutive USA South Regular Season championship last spring.
CNU would go on to earn an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, and hosted an NCAA Regional. The Captains posted school-records for wins in a season, with 42, and postseason victories, with six. CNU finished the 2010 campaign with a Final Four appearance and an overall mark of 42-10, led by Pitcher of the Year Kristen Rowe.
Rowe was a senior in 2010 and will not return for the Captains this season, along with five other senior contributors. Still, CNU received six of the ten first-place votes (77 points) in the poll, as head coaches cannot vote for their own teams in the balloting.
Defending USA South Tournament champs, Greensboro College, finished second in the voting, as the Price received 74 points and three first-place votes. Third in the voting was Ferrum College, earning 65 points and the remaining first-place vote. Rounding out the top half of the league was Shenandoah University and Methodist University with 55 and 54 points, respectively.
The 2011 USA South Softball Tournament will once again be played at Springwood Park in Burlington, North Carolina on April 15-17.
