NORMAN, Okla. — Sixth-ranked Oklahoma scored early and often as the Sooners (6-1) blanked St. Gregory’s 9-0 in five innings on Wednesday afternoon at the OU Softball Complex. Brianna Turang was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring two runs, and Brittany Williams went 2-for-3 with four runs batted in on two home runs.
Allee Allen (1-0) made her first start of the season and allowed just two hits, two walks and struck out three in the 5.0 inning performance.
OU scored its first three runs in the bottom of the first when Turang reached on a single and stole second before Haley Nix drew a walk. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Williams belted her first home run of the game to give the Sooners an early 3-0 lead.
Chana’e Jones made her first of two stellar defensive plays in the top of the second, diving to tag first base before St. Gregory’s Autumn Brown could reach the base.
Oklahoma added two in the second as OU had the bases loaded thanks to an error and back-to-back singles from Turang and Destinee Martinez. Ali Vandever then scored on another Cavalier miscue and Turang scored on a Nix sacrifice fly to push OU in front 5-0.
Jones added a second web gem in the third, going to her backhand to get the ball and make the throw in time to get Shelby Wheeler out to end the inning
Dani Dobbs reached after being hit by a pitch in the third and scored on Katie Norris’ double to center as the Sooners led 6-0 through three. Oklahoma added three in the fourth when Nix singled to reach base and scored on Shults’ fifth home run of the year. Williams then made it 9-0 with her second long ball of the game.
After getting a runner to third in the top of the fifth, pinch hitter Sutton Halferty flied into a double play to end the game.
