SALEM, Va. – Alabama-Huntsville held off a furious rally by Midwestern State in a rain-delayed contest Thursday evening. The Lady Chargers held on for the 3-2 thrilling victory.
UAH jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second stanza. With one away, Kathryn Whitlock singled to right and moved to second when Emily Roach was hit by a pitch. She came home for the game’s first run on Abby MacKay’s single to center.
The score remained the same until the top of the fifth. At that time, MacKay walked to lead things off. Meagan Billingsley was hit by a pitch, putting two aboard. Kellie Johnson reached on an error that allowed MacKay to come home on the play. Two batters later, Krystal Johnson’s sacrifice fly made the margin 3-0 in favor of the Lady Chargers.
MSU fought back in the bottom of the sixth frame. Courtney Bingham walked and scored on Britney Tanner’s shot to the right-center field gap. Tanner moved to third on an illegal pitch and came home on a grounder, putting the score within one, 3-2. However, the team could get no closer.
In the circle for MSU, Brittney Tanner went the distance. She gave up one earned run and struck out 11 while walking just one.
For UAH in the circle, Whitney Toler picked up the win while Alex Lewis was credited with the save.
