Midwestern St. staves off elimination
Gutierrez's complete game two-hit shutout leads Mustangs
SALEM, Va. – Midwestern State broke the game open with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth en route to a 3-0 victory against Indiana (Pa.) in an elimination game Saturday afternoon.
Kristina Gutierrez tossed complete game two-hit shutout to lead her squad to the win.
With the game scoreless in the fourth, Brittany Tanner reached on a fielder’s choice and moved to second on a single. A hit by Alyson Reynolds loaded the bases. Tanner then came home when Amanda Potysman recorded a sacrifice fly in foul territory. The run proved to be the game-winning one.
The Mustangs would tack on two more runs in the fifth stanza. Nicki Duff walked and moved to third when Elena Bennett singled and scooted up on a throwing error. Mallory Mooney flied out to center field. On that play, Duff scored as did Bennett, who came home on a throwing error. Neither run was earned, but the score stood at 3-0 in favor of MSU.
For the game, the Mustangs accounted for three runs on six hits with one error while Indiana (Pa.) totaled two hits and two errors.
Gutierrez struck out seven and walked just one in the win. Erin Holloway took the loss. Holloway gave up three runs, with only one earned. She struck out three and walked two.
Midwestern State is now 53-13 on the season while IUP is 38-8.
Midwestern State moves on to meet Minnesota State at 7:30 p.m. in an elimination game while Indiana (Pa.) has concluded its season.
