Sun Devils tie WCWS record with four homers in game
OKLAHOMA CITY – No. 1 Arizona State recored 14 runs behind four homers in one of the most explosive WCWS championship series contests the Sun Devils ran off with a 14-4 win against No. 4 seed Florida on Monday. Dallas Escobedo moved to 36-3 overall on the year as ASU improved to 59-6. The Sun Devils are now one win from a second NCAA title.
To open the game the Sun Devils drew first blood, but only barely as Lesley Rogers drew a walk before being brought home on a Kaylyn Castillo single up the middle that was mis-handled by center fielder Michele Moultrie to give ASU the 1-0 lead after one inning.
The Sun Devils continued running up the scoreboard in the second again as they got a two-RBI single from Kaylyn Castillo and another RBI from Annie Lockwood to make it 4-0. Krista Donnenwirth then knocked in her sixth home run of the season on a three-run shot to make it 7-0 in ASU’s favor.
A-State added three more runs with RBIs from Castillo, Rogers and Talor Haro to make it a 10-0 lead to give Escobedo some leeway in the circle.
Sam Parlich added another run as she pushed one out of the park with a solo shot to left field, increasing her season total to 13 and making the score 11-0.
ASU came into the fifth full throttle with a two-run shot to right center by Lockwood, only to be followed by Donnenwirth’s second home run of the game to make it 14-0.
Florida took a nibble into the score in the sixth inning though as a solo shot from Kelsey Bruder left the park to break the shutout. Another solo shot followed by a two-run shot by Moultrie in the seventh for the final score.
