Kennesaw, GA...Columbus State pitcher Stasha Morton got out of a first- inning bases-loaded jam and settled down to hurl a four-hitter at Kennesaw State here Thursday in the South Atlantic Regional. CSU took a 1-0 win in eight innings thanks to a clutch RBI double by Amber Lanier in the top of the eighth.

"All I can say is that the grace of God got us through this one," said CSU head coach Tiffany Tootle. "Both teams had opportunities all the way through the game from the first inning on and we were fortunate enough to get a big hit with a runner on base. We got another great pitching performance and got the big hit when we needed it."

Morton moved to 16-4 on the season with the shutout win - her fourth victory of the year over the Owls. KSU got two of its four hits in the first inning and loaded the bases with one out. Singles by Lori Cassell and Keri McKee and a walk to Cambria McKee put runners at each base, but Morton got out of the jam by enticing a groundout off the bat of Jennifer Nolan and a groundout to second by Megan Gant.

When asked about her thoughts after getting out of the jam, Morton responded, "This may sound funny, but I really try my best not to think while I am pitching. The pitch is called and I throw it and hope for the best, and that is all I did. Fortunately the defense made the plays behind me and we were able to get a run and get a win."

Morton held the Owls to singles in the second and fifth innings the rest of the way in taking the win.

CSU, meanwhile, had opportunities to score in the second, sixth, and seventh innings, leaving two runners aboard in the second and sixth and leaving the sacks full in the seventh. Toby Moore led off the eighth with a walk and was forced out at second on a fielder's choice off the bat of Lucia Heston to set the stage for Lanier. The sophomore left fielder fouled off five pitches before connecting on a pitch that got over the head of left fielder Jen Hunt to score Heston all the way from first.

Morton got three groundouts in the bottom of the eighth to close out the win.

Lanier, Mia Moffett, and Allison Paul led an eight-hit CSU attack with two hits each in the game. Cassell had two of the four Owl hits.

CSU will now face the North Florida - USC Upstate game on Friday in a winners bracket game at 5 PM.

NOTES: CSU was 4-14 in regional contests prior to Thursday...Tootle, in six years at CSU, had beaten KSU just once prior to this season - her squad is now 5-0 against the Owls in 2005...Amber Lanier extended her team best hitting streak to 14 games with hits in each game on Thursday.
