Lynn 5, Alabama-Huntsville 4 (13 Innings)

May 12, 2005

It took 13 innings, but Lynn University edged out No. 2 seed and host Alabama-Huntsville 5-4 in the second round of the South Region tournament. With the win, Lynn improves to 48-7 overall and 2-0 in the region tournament and will face top-seeded West Florida on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. Meanwhile the Chargers fall to 51-15 and will meet Saint Leo in an elimination game at 11 a.m. on Friday morning.

Before a crowd of 452 onlookers, the Chargers wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard as centerfielder Kristen Spencer ledoff the bottom of the first with a single through the right side. Spencer then swiped second base before coming home to score on a single by designated player Jenny Hess that was mishandled by Lynn outfielder Rachel Foster.

The two teams then cruised through the next four innings before the Fighting Knights pushed across a tying measure off of UAH starter Lindsey Skinner in the fifth. LU right fielder Jennie Scott led off the frame by taking a pitch off the hand to get aboard. A sacrifice bunt moved Scott over to second before she advanced to third on a single up the middle by center fielder Danielle Curcio. With runners on the corners, Hess got the ground ball she needed to turn the double play but the Chargers only got the runner from first as Scott came across the dish to knot the game at one.

The game then went into a stalemate as Skinner and her LU counterpart Aimee Murch were splendid on the mound through the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings. Then, in the tenth, Curcio lined a shot over the right center field fence as part of a 4-for-5 game at the plate. LU then opened up to a 4-1 lead when first baseman Christina Rolla hit a two-run homer, her 23rd of the year, over the left field wall after Scott who had doubled.

The Chargers had no quit in them however, coming back with a three-run tenth of their own. A leadoff single by right fielder Summer Reeves got the rally started. A one-out single by first baseman Mary Farris got two aboard for UAH. Third baseman Ashley Camp then singled to right to load the bases on Murch. A sacrifice fly by second baseman Ashley Tate brought Kristy Pilkerton, who pinch ran for Reeves, in to score from third. Then, Spencer launched her 29th double of season breaking the Gulf South Conference record for doubles in a season, but more importantly bringing Camp and Tate around to tie the game at 4-4.

The game remained knotted until the 13th when Lynn designated player Jenna Piotrowski opened the frame with a triple to right field off. With the potential game-winning run on third, Skinner got the next two batters out and got a routine ground ball to third base for what would have been the third out. The ball trickled off Camp's glove however and the go-ahead run came in to score.

Entering the game with an astonishing 0.37 ERA, Murch improved to 33-3 on the season with her 32nd complete game while Skinner falls to 20-10 on the year. Murch tossed 13 innings scattering nine Charger hits and striking out 13 and walking five.

Skinner tossed the first nine and one-thirds innings giving up ten hits while striking out four and walking four before giving way to Jenny Hess, who finished off the last two outs of the tenth. A line drive by Lynn's Kristina Ely right back up the middle found Hess' knee and ended her night in the 11th and UAH skipper Les Stuedeman was forced to bring Skinner back to the mound. Skinner finished the night with a school record 12 innings pitched, giving up four earned runs and 11 hits while walking two and striking out eight.
