Alabama-Huntsville 5, St. Leo 3

May 13, 2005

South Region number two seed Alabama-Huntsville made Saint Leo the first casualty of the tournament with a 5-3 win in the first game of the losers bracket. With the win, the Chargers (52-15) advanced to the next round to face the winner of the second game between Albany State and Florida Southern. Saint Leo ended their season at 35-17.

UAH drew first blood in the second inning when shortstop Kellie Corder singled in a pair of runs. Third-baseman Ashley Camps and first baseman Mary Farris scored on the play, giving the Chargers a 2-0 lead.

The Lions came roaring back in the third with three runs. Center fielder Ashley Black tripled with one out in the inning, then scored on shortstop Alison Flynns RBI single. Later in the inning, right fielder Heather Stroud drove in the other two runs with a single down the right field line, scoring Flynn and Erin Brunt.

The one-run lead was short-lived as UAH came right back to tie the game on Stephanie Pintos RBI single. The Chargers reclaimed the lead in the sixth inning on Ashley Tates two-run double to the right-center field gap. UAH had a chance to blow the game open after loading the bases with nobody out. However, the Chargers couldnt push across any more runs.

In the seventh, the Chargers had the bases loaded again, but outfielder Kristin Spencer lined into a triple play to end the inning. However, starting pitch Lindsey Skinner sat the Lions down in order to end the game.

Farris, Ashley Potter and Kellie Corder had two hits each for UAH. Corder was 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and two RBI, while Potter batted 2-for-3 and Farris 2-for-4.

Stroud and catcher Erin Brunt led Saint Leo with two hits each. Stroud was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

After pitching 12 innings late Thursday night, junior left-hander Lindsey Skinner (21-10) returned to the circle and earned the win. She went the distance, surrendering three runs on six hits. She also struck out six. Losing pitcher Heather Gamlin gave up five runs on 11 hits. She also had six walks, while striking out only one.

GAME FIVE QUOTES ALABAMA-HUNTSVILLE vs. SAINT LEO

Alabama-Huntsville Head Coach Les Steudeman

We just cant get that big hit to break open a game but, we moved Kelly (Corder) from the two to the nine and she hit some big doubles in the third inning, then (Ashley) Tate comes up with bases loaded and goes opposite (field) and that was just a huge hit, especially because we didnt get anything after that. Weve just got to keep on swinging, thats all we can do. Were putting the ball in play, just not getting it through anywhere.

On the bases loaded with no outs in the 6th inning: We had the bases loaded with no outs and just couldnt get a run out of that.

On the triple play: In the 7th inning she hit it hard but there is nothing you can do about that.

On Lindsey Skinners 19 innings: She did it last year, and she has got to do it again this year. We have put our backs up against the wall and thats the way it is. Shell go, shes going to go, shes all we got.

Saint Leo Head Coach Christi Wade

We showed up this game and played, our defense played, our bats were there much more than they were the first game when we played.

Its always been a tough battle between us and Huntsville.

Theyve got a good team; they got a timely hit when we didnt get a timely hit so thats what projected them to win.

On the triple play: It was pretty nice, even though the umpire was a little confused on which on was the final out, it was a triple play and it is nice to make those. We thought that would carry a bit more momentum in, but it didnt. We had a good year.
