Lynn 2, West Florida 0

May 13, 2005

MADISON, ALA.: Lynn University pitcher Aimee Murch tossed a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts as Lynn topped West Florida, 2-0, Friday in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament in Madison, Ala. Lynn advances to the finals while West Florida falls to the losers bracket, and will face either Florida Southern or Alabama-Huntsville Saturday afternoon at 1 pm. Lynn improves to 50-9 on the season while West Florida falls to 59-5.

Murch and Argonaut starter Amber Browning both entered the game with earned run averages under one and a combined 710 strikeouts. After a scoreless first inning, Lynn got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning. Tiffani King reached on an error by Browning, her first error of the season. Jenna Piotrowski then fell behind Browning 0-2 before fouling off four consecutive pitches. Piotrowski worked the count to 3-2, and then drove a pitch down the left field line that just stayed fair to give Lynn a 2-0 advantage.

Murch, who entered the game with a 0.44 earned run average, allowed a first inning single to Alex Tice, and hit Lindsay Warrenfeltz in the second inning. Those would be the only two base runners for West Florida in the entire game. Murch retired the final 18 batters while striking out 12 along the way for her second victory of the tournament. Murch had tossed 13 innings in Lynns 5-4 victory over Alabama-Huntsville on Thursday. Meanwhile, Browning was equally as effective as Murch after giving up Piotrowskis home run in the second inning. Browning only allowed three hits in the game and retired 12 Fighting Knight hitters at one point. Browning finished the game with 11 strikeouts.

West Florida falls to the losers bracket, and will face either Alabama-Huntsville or Florida Southern on Saturday at 1 pm. If West Florida wins their first game, they will advance to face Lynn in the finals. The Argonauts must defeat Lynn twice tomorrow in order to advance to the national tournament for the second time in three years. West Florida won three games last Sunday against Alabama-Huntsville and Delta State (twice) to win the Gulf South Conference (GSC) Tournament. The game will be broadcasted on Stretch Internet.

QUOTES

Lynn Head Coach Thomas Macera
We played better than we did last night, after three and a half weeks off before last night we were a bit rusty. Aimee didnt pitch her game last night and we pulled it out. But today she pitched as well as she could and I dont think a hit got out of the infield. Its all on her, she pitched a great job, the people didnt miss any play, didnt make any mistakes, between the pitching and the defense.

On the two run game winning homerun in the 2nd inning: Thats our advantage over most of these teams, we just have the ability to hit the long ball, we have six in the lineup that could go deep at any given time. With that hitters chance, I will take it over speed.

West Florida Head Coach Tami Cyr
On the two run game winning homerun in the 2nd inning:
It was really a great game for us, she just threw one bad pitch, she threw some off speed, probably just ran out of pitches, and she got all of it.

We have just got to find a way to hit Aimee Murch, shes fantastic, she changes speed and switches all around, shes just really good. She threw a good game against us.

On battling threw the losers bracket:
We do the best we can, we had three games to win the conference tournament last week so they know they can do it physically, were just going to sit down and watch this game (UAH vs. Florida Southern) and see who our competition is going to be first thing in the morning and not overlook that game by any means, win that game and try to get a hold of Aimee again, shes just a really good pitcher and we have just got to somehow between now and then, try to win that first game in the morning, and figure out how to be competitive against that girl.
