Babson 6, Bridgewater State 0

May 14, 2005

BABSON PARK, Mass. - Sophomore Stacy Schlicht (Hillsborough, Calif.) tossed a three-hit shutout to lead Babson College to a 6-0 victory over Bridgewater State College in game six of the 2005 NCAA Division III Softball Tournament New England Regional at Babson on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Babson (38-7) moves on to play Endicott College in game eight at 4 p.m. on Saturday, while Bridgewater State finishes its stellar season with a record of 23-17.

Schlicht was outstanding on the mound for the Beavers, allowing just three baserunners in the contest. She surrendered an infield hit by junior Diana Rice (Wareham, Mass.) to start the third, a lead-off single to right center by junior Abigail Scott (Southampton, Mass.) in the sixth, and a single to left center by first-year Danielle Trull-Donahue (Norfolk, Mass.) to begin the seventh. Overall, Schlicht (11-3) allowed three hits and no walks while striking out four in seven innings. It was her 11th complete game and third shutout of the season.

Offensively, Babson gave its sophomore hurler all the support she would need in the top of the first inning, as sophomore Alex Lazar (Milton, Mass.) singled in classmate Andrea Cartullo (Holbrook, Mass.), who had led off with a single, stolen second, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Lazar then advanced to third when first-year Jess Cohen (Pittsford, N.Y.) was thrown out at first by right fielder Rice for the inning's second out, and she came home on an RBI-single to right by first-year Jess Byrn (Safety Harbor, Fla.).

The Beavers tacked on another run when senior co-captain Kara Courtney (Northampton, Mass.) singled in Bryn in the third, and then made it 4-0 when Cartullo singled, stole her second base of the day, and scored on a Bridgewater State error in the fourth. Babson scored again on an error in the sixth and Lazar drove in her second run of the game later that inning to cap off the 6-0 victory.

For the game, Lazar went 4-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Cartullo and Courtney each added two hits. Bridgewater State junior Katie Tauber (Carver, Mass.) started and gave up two runs on five hits in the loss, dropping her season record to 12-9.
