CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The top-ranked Washington University softball team advanced to the finals of the winner's bracket of the NCAA Regional with a 1-0 victory over fourth-seeded St. Mary's University (Minn.) on Saturday afternoon at Clarke Field on the campus of Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The Bears will take on second-seed and defending national champion University of St. Thomas (37-6) on Sunday at Noon. The Tommies advanced with an 8-1 win over third-seeded Coe College in game five. St. Mary's (35-11) falls to the loser's bracket where they will take on sixth-seeded University of Wisconsin-Stout at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

"We play one inning at a time and one game at a time," said Washington University head coach Cindy Zelinsky . "We are happy with the victory and look forward to playing on Sunday."

Sophomore Laurel Sagartz allowed just one hit in the victory as she improved to 23-1 on the mound. Sagartz gave up a second inning infield hit to Amy Lange for the only hit of the game for the Cardinals. After the infield hit to Lange, Sagartz retired the final 17 batters. The shutout for Sagartz was the 10th of the season and the 25th of the year for the Bears. The 25 shutouts tie for fifth on the single-season shutout list in Division III history.

The Bears scored their only run in the bottom of the first inning. With one out in the first, junior Amanda Roberts got the Bears first hit of the game after doubling to left field. After senior Liz Swary flew out, Sagartz helped herself by driving the first pitch to right center for an RBI double for the game-winning hit.

Jenny Schipp (24-6) took the loss for St. Mary's as she allowed three hits while striking out nine and walking one. Roberts was 1-for-3 with a run scored while sophomore Jamie Kressel was 1-for-2 for the Bears.

Washington University improves to 46-1 overall and has now won 29-consecutive games, the ninth longest winning streak in Division III history. The 46 wins also move the Bears into seventh place on the all-time single-season wins list in DIII history. WU is now just two wins off the DIII record of 48, set by The College of New Jersey.
