Cedar Rapids, Iowa, May 15, 2005 The University of St. Thomas softball team showed why they are the defending national champion as the Tommies ended top-ranked Washington Universitys 29-game winning streak with a 7-0 win in the winners bracket of the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional held at Clark Field on the campus of Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Washington University (46-2) falls to the losers bracket where they will play the winner of St. Marys University and Fontbonne University at 5 p.m. on Sunday.

St. Thomas (38-6) got on the board in the bottom of the second inning after three singles. With one out, Maria Bye singled to left field and then Carrie Embree reached on an infield single. After Janet Nagle reached on a fielders choice, Mandy Evans singled off WU starting pitcher Laurel Sagartzs, Albuquerque, N.M. (Albuquerque Academy) glove scoring Bye for the first run of the game.

The Bears threatened in the top of the third after senior Jackie Burgdorf, Cincinnati, Ohio (Mound Notre Dame) was hit by a pitch and junior Dionna Little, Plano, Texas (Plano) reached on an error to start the inning. The two advanced to second and third after a passed ball by Nikki Conway.

Freshman Laura DAndrea, Mt. Prospect, Ill. (Prospect) struck out and then junior Amanda Roberts, St. Louis, Mo. (Lindbergh) laid down a bunt on the ensuing play, but Burgdorf was thrown out at home on the play. Senior Liz Swary, Cleveland, Ohio (Shaker Heights) then struck out to end the rally.

In the top of the third, UST added three more runs on just one hit. Conway led off the inning with a walk and then scored on a throwing error by Swary. Embree then made it 4-0 after doubling to right field scoring Kristi Huegel and Bye.

The Tommies added a run in the bottom of the fourth as Conway doubles to left field with two outs scoring Colleen Fitzpatrick. St. Thomas made it 7-0 in the fifth after Bye launched a two-run home run to centerfield.

Nagle pitched five innings allowing no hits while striking out seven to pick up the victory. Sagartz, who fell to 23-2, pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing seven hits and four unearned runs. Junior Monica Hanono, Chula Vista, Calif. (Bonita Vista) had the only hit for the Bears, an infield single in the sixth.
