DePaul 6, Wisconsin 0

May 20, 2005

MADISON, Wis. - Tracie Adix and Megan Huitink teamed up on a two-hitter and Saskia Roberson hit a two-run home run as DePaul downed Wisconsin 6-0 in the opening game of an NCAA softball regional at Goodman Diamond Friday evening.

With the victory, the Blue Demons advance to take on the winner of Friday night's second contest between top-seeded Oregon State and fourth-seeded UW-Green Bay at noon Saturday. The Badgers will take on the loser at 2:30 p.m.

DePaul (41-18) scored two runs apiece in the first, third and fifth innings and took advantage of three Wisconsin (31-23) errors to earn the win.

Kris Zacher led off the game with a double, ripping the first offering she saw from Adix to the left-center field gap. However, Adix was able to keep UW off the scoreboard by sandwiching a pair of strikeouts around a groundout to strand Zacher at third.

Eden Brock retired the first two batters she faced in the bottom of the first, but an error on a ball hit by Sany Vojik kept the inning alive. The miscue cost the Badgers as Roberson took Brock deep for her 14th home run of the year to put the Blue Demons ahead 2-0.

UW got the leadoff batter at second base again in the top of the third as Natalie Phillips reached on an error to open the frame. However, she was quickly erased as she was cut down in a rundown between second and third on a ball hit by Athena Vasquez. Vasquez would eventually advance to second on a two-out passed ball, but was left stranded.

Another Wisconsin error in the bottom of the third helped to lead to two more runs by DePaul. Following back-to-back singles to open the inning, Vojik's sacrifice bunt was misplayed, loading the bases with no one out. Brock struck out Roberson for the first out, but a wild pitch with Linda Secka at bat increased the Blue Demons' lead to three before an RBI groundout by Secka made it 4-0.

DePaul threatened again in the fourth as Kara Amundson doubled with one away and was replaced by pinch runner Kate Hanson. Pinch hitter Marcy Wilus came through with a two-out single to left, but Anastasia Miller teamed up with Boo Gillette to nab Hanson at the plate trying to score to end the inning.

The Badgers put two more runners in scoring position in the top of the fifth, but came away empty-handed once again. Miller led off the inning with a single and Vasquez was hit by a two-out pitch, prompting DePaul to bring on Megan Huitink to replaced Adix. A balk by Huitink with Zacher at the plate gave UW runners at second and third, but Zacher was retired on a groundout to first to keep the deficit at four.

The Blue Demons tacked on two final runs in the fifth as Jessica Evans' two-out double to right scored two runs, with the second one coming across on UW's third error of the game on the play.

DePaul outhit Wisconsin 9-2 in the contest, though no Blue Demon player had more than one hit. Adix (23-7) picked up the win, allowing two hits while striking out seven in 4.2 innings of work. Brock (20-10) took the loss, surrendering nine hits and striking out six. Just two of the six runs she allowed were earned.

Game Notes

This afternoon's meeting was the first between DePaul and Wisconsin since a double header during the 1999 season at DePaul. The Badgers are 1-4 all-time against the Blue Demons * Wisconsin senior Kris Zacher collected her 200th career hit with a double off of the game's first pitch. She is now just three hits behind Julie Borchard (1996-99) for UW's all-time lead*DePaul is making its ninth consecutive NCAA regional appearance and has now posted at least one win in each of them * Senior Saskia Roberson hit her 50th career home run in the first inning. The blast also gives Roberson at least one home run in NCAA Regional play in three straight years * With two RBI, Roberson moved within two of the Conference USA career record (Houston's Kristen Glowacz currently holds the record of 175 RBI) * The Blue Demons have scored six or more runs in three of their last four NCAA games

Postgame Quotes

Wisconsin Head Coach Karen Gallagher
"It's a pleasure hosting this tournament. We've built a wonderful complex for this and it's really great to see the people out there and the enthusiasm and energy that the tournament environment brings. I was hoping that the team would step up a little bit better tonight and play a better ball game. We didn't play a bad ball game. I thought Eden (Brock) pitched a good game, but ultimately you have to play some defense behind the pitching staff. I thought our hitters didn't make adjustments like they should have and like they've done in the past. I give credit to the DePaul pitching staff. They did a great job, but I know that our kids are a better hitting team than they proved tonight."

Wisconsin shortstop Kris Zacher on the double-elimination format:
"You've got to play every game like it's your last. Just because we know that no matter what we have two games this weekend, that's not in our heads. Tomorrow we need to play our game, we need to play as a team, we need to play offense and defense and we're going to win."

DePaul Head Coach Eugene Lenti
"Obviously we played pretty well today. We had one error early in the game but we overcame it. Tracie (Adix) did a great job of settling down there. We hit the ball very well, I think we got a hit out of every spot in the batting order, one through nine. When you get good pitching and good hitting, you're going to win."

DePaul pitcher Tracie Adix on the first inning:
"It was a little rough, it's pretty irritating to give up a lead-off double. I just took a few steps off of the mound, took a deep breath and just relaxed a little bit more."

DePaul first baseman Saskia Roberson on her home run:
"(Brock) is a drop ball pitcher, so I just had to step up in the box and get to the ball before it dropped. I just got out in front and drove it."
