FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 15 Fresno State softball team defeated Brigham Young, 3-0, behind the no-hit performance of All-America pitcher Jamie Southern.

Advancing to Saturday's championship game, the Bulldogs scored three runs on seven hits as Southern also helped her cause at the plate with a two-run double.

Of historical note, Southern pitched just the fourth no-hitter in postseason play in Fresno State history. Three have been recorded in regional action as Southern joined Lori Romeiro-Gardner (May 17, 1985 vs. Cal Poly-Pomona, W 1-0) and Wende Ward (May 9, 1980 vs. Arizona State, W 3-0). Amanda Scott is the fourth Bulldog pitcher to throw a no-hitter as she recorded her feat at the 1998 NCAA Women's College World Series against Michigan (May 22, W 8-0).

Throwing her second straight shutout win in NCAA Region 2 play, Southern also notched her second consecutive 10-strikeout performance. On the year, she has posted 19 shutouts and 13 10-strikeout games to go along with four no-hitters. Southern now owns the school's all-time mark for no-no's with eight as she broke the tie with Melanie Parrent (7, 1985-88).

Fresno State picked up the win after posting a three-run fifth. As the visitors, sophomore left fielder Rachael Donaldson drew a lead off walk. After the next two Bulldogs got out, senior centerfielder Kristy Villasenor ripped a single down the left field line. With runners on first and second, junior All-America shortstop Christina Clark collected a RBI single to left field to score Donaldson. With runners on first and second again, Southern then drilled a double to right center to plate Villasenor and Clark.

BYU utilized two pitchers as starter Daniella Urincho took the loss. Falling to 16-3 on the year, she allowed three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out four in 5.1 innings of work. Reliever Brooke Boyce threw the final 1.2 innings and yielded one hit while walking two and striking out two.

BYU (45-13) will face the winner of the California-Long Beach State game at 8:00 p.m. tonight.

Fresno State (43-10) will play on Sat., May 21, 3:00 p.m. The Bulldogs will meet the winner of tonight's 8:00 p.m. game.
