Notre Dame 3, Louisville 2

May 20, 2005

SOUTH BEND, Ind. The University of Louisville softball team built a 2-0 lead, but host Notre Dame scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to send the Cardinals to the losers bracket in the first game of the 2005 NCAA regional Friday.

The Cards had an opportunity to score in the top of the first. Audrey Rendon reached on a leadoff infield single and Candi Hicks and Courtney Moore walked to load the bases with no outs. Notre Dame starter Steffany Stenglein struck out the next three batters to get out of the jam.

Louisville got on the scoreboard in the second when Leslie Garland and Rendon delivered back-to-back two-out infield hits. Hicks RBI single to left field scored Garland to make it a 1-0 game. The Cardinals struck again in the third when Wood led off with a single and came on a double by Sara Bausher to increase the lead to 2-0.

Notre Dame threatened in the bottom of the fourth when Kellie Middleton singled, stole second and took third on a Cardinal error. Megan Ciolli reached on a fielders choice to Louisville second baseman Michelle Vasquez who gunned a throw to catcher Lacy Wood who tagged Middleton out at home.

Katie Laing singled to lead off the fifth, but Louisville starter Aja Sherman retired the next three batters to end the inning.

U of L had yet another scoring opportunity in the sixth when Lisa Estes singled to left field and Garland and Rendon reached on infield singles to load the bases with one out. Notre Dame reliever Heather Booth struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Fighting Irish & Stephanie Brown drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on Middletons single down the right field line to put runners on first and third with no outs. Coillis single up the middle sent Brown home to pull Notre Dame within one run. Carrie Wisens two-run single scored scored Middleton and Ciolli to give Notre Dame a 3-2 lead.

Sherman (21-11) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and striking out seven in six innings. Offensively, the Cards were led by Rendons 3 for 4 performance. Garland was 2 for 3 with a run. Louisville (42-19) will play the loser of the Northwestern/Albany game Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Notre Dames Booth (22-7) got the win, holding the Cards scoreless on four hits and striking out nine in four innings of relief. The Fighting Irish (45-13) will face the winner of the Northwestern/Albany matchup Saturday at noon.

Louisville Head Coach Sandy Pearsall
On a tough loss &
This team knows how to come back and they will be ready to play tomorrow. We know how to regroup.

On Notre Dame pitching staff &
We got our self in position to score a lot of runs, but when it came down to it, Notre Dame had a fine pitching staff and really made some big plays with the bases loaded.

Notre Dame Head Coach Deanna Gumpf
On Notre Dame Pitcher Heater Booth &
Heather Booth was amazing. Heather (Booth) is use to that situation coming into the game and that is what Heather does best. She was tougher than nails today and her change-up was remarkable.

On to days pitching &
Getting 17 strike-outs today was great. Steffany (Stenglein) still got people out even struggling with her pitches, and Heather (Booth) really added to that, but I expect that from them. It was amazing to get that many strikeouts in a game like that.

On not getting runs until the 6th inning &
We did struggle early, and did not put the ball in play when we needed to, but we know how to fight. That is why we have had some late inning victories.

On getting a win in the first game of the tournament &
The first one is always the hardest, we have to take one game at a time and focus on that.

Notre Dame Senior Designated Player Carrie Wisen
On the big at bat ...
Going in to the at bat, I told my self that I was going to wait for an outside pitch. I was upset I took the first pitch, but the second one was a middle down pitch and got the one I wanted. It was important to capitalize on the opportunity. We have been fighting all year long and in the sixth inning we did just that

On playing at home today &
It was awesome to go out their, and the fans were great. We go into the next game more relaxed and now can get ready to play the next game.
