May 20, 2005

COLLEGE STATION, Texas- The No. 5 Texas A&M softball team (45-8) pushed five runs across in the first to defeat McNeese St. (33-34), 6-3, in day-one regional action at the Aggie Softball Complex.

It feels good to come out and get the first win in the NCAAs, commented A&M head coach Jo Evans. I was really pleased that we came out aggressive in the first and scored some runs. I think Megan did a great job in the circle and our defense was solid all day.

Right fielder Rocky Spencer (Katy, Texas) was named the State Farm Player of the Game after a 2-for-2, 2-RBI performance at the plate.

In the circle, Megan Gibson (Spring, Texas) earned the win with a six-inning, six-strikeout performance. Lisa Gorzycki entered in the seventh in relief earning (Bryan, Texas) her first-career save.

After Gibson retired the Cowgirls in order in the first, Jana James (Mesquite, Texas) put the Aggies up 2-0 with a two-run double to left scoring Jami Lobries (Wharton, Texas) and Jamie Hinshaw (Missouri City, Texas) after they singled and walked, respectively. Gibson then made it 3-0 with a single to short forcing a throwing error that plated James from second. After Lindsay Park (Arcadia, Calif.) singled to short, Spencer drove in the Aggies fourth run with a single up the middle scoring Gibson and moving pinch runner Morgan Hebert (Peoria, Ariz.) to third on a fielding error by the center fielder. Hebert quickly made it 5-0 when she scored on a wild pitch as Spencer stole second.

In the third, Spencer recorded her second hit and second RBI of the day on her second single up the middle scoring Gibson and moving Park to second. Gibson reached on a throwing error by the shortstop and moved to second on Parks single through the right side.

The Cowgirls pushed two across in the fifth and one in the seventh but their seventh-inning rally fell short when Aggie second baseman Joy Davis (Austin, Texas) made a leaping grab on a line drive doubling up the runner at first.

Texas A&M, the Big 12 Regular Season champions, will continue tournament play on Saturday at noon against Penn St.

With the win, the Aggies extended their home win streak to 19 games.
