Chapman 5, Ithaca 4

May 21, 2005

Raleigh, NC As the sun set on the Walnut Creek softball complex, the Chapman Panthers and Ithaca Bombers made sure there was not shortage of electricity as they lit up the scoreboard. It was Chapman though who outlasted Ithaca to earn the 5-4 victory.

Ithaca got on the board first in the 3rd inning when outfielder Leigh Bonkowski smashed a single to right field to bring in the run. The Bombers did not stop there. With runners on 2nd and 3rd Sophomore Mel Chinigo dropped one into shallow right field to clear the bases and give Ithaca the 3-0 lead. That lead would be short lived.

In the bottom half of the third, it was Chapman who took their turn at the plate and made the most of it. After outfielder Keely Star singled and Katherine Searing walked, infielder Jill Jeranko hit a ground ball to shortstop, but the force out throw to third could not be handled and Star scored on the passed ball to give Chapman their first run of the game. Then it was Kim Sanders who ripped a double down the third base line to bring in two runs to knot the game up at 3-3.

After a scoreless fourth inning the Bombers bats came alive in the fifth. Hannah Shalett singled down the first base side. Second baseman Jessica Stangarone moved pinch runner Lindsay Galli over to second with a sacrifice bunt. Things got interesting when Bonkowski stepped to the plate and hit a single to left field. She then was caught in a run down between first and second base and Galli saw an opportunity to get home. Chapman turned their attention to home plate and made the throw, only to see the umpire was in the line of fire and the ball bounced off of the umpires head as Galli scored to give Ithaca a 4-3 lead. On a side note, the umpire walked away from the incident unharmed.

In the bottom half of the 6th inning Chapman tied the score again when Kailee Roeser knocked in Catherine Hall on a double to left center field. That run would prove to be crucial and eventually send the game into extra innings after a scoreless seventh inning.

In the bottom half of the 8th inning it was Chapman infielder Kim Sanders who hit a double into the left center field gap to give the Panthers hope. The Bombers then intentionally walked Hall to give Chapman a runner on 1st and 2nd. Sandra Burns then stepped up to the plate and delivered by hitting a shallow shot to center field to set the stage with bases loaded. Ashlie Vohs did not waste any time and crushed a monster shot on the first pitch over the right fielders head to bring in the winning run and help Chapman to advance.

I had great team support as I walked up to the plate. I was looking for something outside, she gave me one that hung a little, and I got a piece of it. It went a little further than what I thought it would Vohs said jokingly.

Chapman head coach Janet Lloyd had this to say, its the same thing all day, you get runners on base and look for that big hit. Tonight it just took eight innings to get it. Every team here is tough and we have a great respect for all of the teams here. It doesnt get any easier.

Chapman moves to 36-7 on the season with the victory and will face St. Thomas (MN) on Sunday at 5:00 PM with a trip to the title game on the line. Ithaca drops to 30-13 on the season and will face Alma at 2:30 PM Sunday in the consolation bracket.
