Ithaca 1, William Paterson 0

May 21, 2005

RALEIGH, NC (May 21) In its opening game against Ithaca at the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Finals, No. 7-seeded William Paterson put runners on first and third with one out in the fifth and sixth innings, then loaded the bases in the seventh and eighth innings.

Problem was, none of those scenarios produced a run as the Pioneers (37-10-1) fell to No. 2 Ithaca (30-12), 1-0, in eight innings after leaving 13 runners on base, including 10 in the final four innings. The loss relegates William Paterson to a loser's bracket against Muskingum (OH) at 3 p.m., with the winner advancing and the loser going home from this eight-team, double-elimination tournament.

"I just felt like it was one hit that could have broken open this game," William Paterson coach Hallie Cohen said. "I thought it was a great game. They got it done with runners in scoring position."

Ithaca started its winning rally when right fielder Jenn Marro drew a leadoff walk off Pioneers' junior right-hander Jenn Scott (Mount Ephraim, NJ/Bishop Eustace), then was sacrificed to second by catcher Hannah Shalett. The next hitter, second baseman Jessica Stangarone (2-for-4), boomed a triple to the right-field wall that brought across Marro with the game's lone run.

Meanwhile, right-hander Carly Myers worked out of trouble in the last four frames, forcing the Pioneers to squander 10 runners. Myers finished with a seven-hit shutout, walking five (three intentional) while fanning four. Her counterpart, Scott, fell to 17-8 after allowing one hit, one run and one walk over 1.1 innings of relief.

Scott entered one batter into the seventh and helped the Pioneers thwart the Blue Bombers after first baseman Kaitlyn Dulac drilled a leadoff double off freshman right-hander Diana Schraer (Paramus, NJ/Paramus), who scattered five hits over six shutout innings before leaving the game. After a sacrifice bunt moved pinch-runner Amanda Kowalsick to third, Scott induced a groundout and a pop-up.

Sophomore center fielder Brandi Kavaliauskas (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional) went 2-for-4 to lead a seven-hit attack for the Pioneers, who now must battle through the loser's bracket to keep their national championship hopes alive. They have done it before, having battled through the loser's bracket of the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament two weekends ago by winning three games in less than 24 hours.

"I think our kids have confidence in themselves," Cohen said.
