Lynn 1, Northern Kentucky 0

May 22, 2005

Salem, Va. - Lynn Universitys softball team defeated previously undefeated and no.1 ranked Northern Kentucky 1-0 at the NCAA Division II Softball Championships, ending the nations longest winning streak and catapulting itself into the nationally televised championship game. Aimee Murch was once again dominating, notching her sixth consecutive double-digit strikeout performance, while Danielle Curcios home run scored the only run of the game. The Blue and White will play the winner of the Northern Kentucky/Kennesaw State game on Monday at 11 am, which will air live on Sun Sports TV in Florida and nationwide on CSTV.

Were back to good ole Lynn softball, hitting the ball hard, playing great defense and having phenomenal pitching, said head coach Thomas Macera. They're [NKU] a great team, I mean their pitcher is awesome and their defense is solid. They had to do something right to get to where they are now.

Curcio, the Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year, broke a 0-0 tie in the third inning with her 11th home run of the season. The Australian native turned on a 3-2 rise ball from NCAA Division II Player of the Year Krystal Lewallen and sent it over the left center field fence.

The first time I struck out but I felt good swinging the bat the next time I was out there, said Curcio. She threw me a rise ball, and I never hit rise balls, but I think I was just lucky to connect.

You always feel the pressure dissipate when you get a lead, said Murch. I knew my teammates would come through and score some runs but I just go about my business no matter if were winning or losing.

Murch, a First-Team All-America selection, won her 23rd consecutive start and is the only starting pitcher to not allow a run in the entire tournament, tossing three shutouts. The senior right-hander struck out 12 this afternoon and has now sat down 36 batters in 21 innings pitched but allowed five hits, doubling the amount she had allowed in her two previous games combined.

I felt ok today but I felt much better on Friday, said Murch, who had a day off Saturday. It was nice to have the time off in between starts but I think I throw better on consecutive days. My change-up was working well but my rise ball started to get out of the zone.

Northern Kentucky (55-1) threatened in the third and sixth innings, but the stoic Murch kept the Norse at bay. In the third, NKU managed to get runners on first and second but struck out swinging in its next two at-bats. In the sixth, Stephanie Leimbach singled to third but advanced to second on a wild throw with only one out. Angie Lindeman proceeded to pop out to Alex Acosta while clean-up hitter Sarah King struck out on a filthy change-up on the inside corner to end the threat.

The Knights will play Monday, May 23 at 11 am. The game will be aired live on Sun Sports TV in Florida and nationwide on CSTV, with the second game running at 1:30 pm, if necessary. Fans, you can also follow along through live stats and audio by logging on to www.lynn.edu/athletics.
