Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford softball team fell to No. 11 Tennessee, 6-0, this afternoon at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium in NCAA Super Regional action. The Lady Vols advance to the Women's College World Series next week for the first time in program history with today's victory. The Cardinal end their season at 43-16.

Tennessee scored five runs in the bottom of the third with the help of two Cardinal errors.

The Lady Vols added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 6-0.

Monica Abbott kept the Stanford hitters in check, scattering one hit over seven innings of work to pick up the win in the circle. Abbott is now 47-7 on the year. Freshman Becky McCullough (21-7) took the loss for the Cardinal, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits over 2.1 innings. Reliever Laura Severson finished out the game for Stanford, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits in 3.2 innings pitched.

Freshman first baseman Erin Howe collected the Cardinal's only hit, going 1-for-2 at the plate.

Lindsay Schutzler went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Tennessee while teammate Natalie Brock picked up two RBI as well. Katherine Card also recorded two hits for the Lady Vols.

Six Stanford seniors played their final game for the Cardinal this afternoon: Leah Nelson, Meghan Sickler, Elizabeth Bendig, Katherine Hoffman, Heather Shook and Michelle Thiry.
