SALEM, VA - In a game that saw 10 runs scored and 26 total hits, Angelo State (50-9) eliminated Winona State (50-13) with a 7-3 victory in the NCAA Division II Softball Championship at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, VA.

In game ten of the tournament, both teams were held scoreless in their first at bat. Winona State dented the scoreboard first in their half of the second. Kathy Crudo led off the top of the second with a single. Callie Givens then sacrificed Crudo to second with a bunt. After a Kelly Ward groundout, Jenny Wilmes singled to score Crudo and give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. Terra Halron followed up with a single but Angelo State pitcher April Haywood retired the final hitter of the inning with a strikeout.

Angelo State responded right back in their half of the second with a two spot. Megan Pumphrey was hit by a pitch to lead off the second. After a foul out, Sarah DeMoss singled up the middle. Both runners advanced a base on an illegal pitch to put runners at second and third with one out. Nicole Smith singled to drive in Pumphrey and after Smith stole second, Kristen Frye hit a sacrifice fly to score DeMoss and give the Rambelles a 2-1 lead after two innings.

Winona State did not take long to answer, scoring the tying run in their half of the third. Amanda Wilhelm started off the inning with a single. Mollie Bjelland hit into a force out for the first out of the inning. A groundout to the pitcher was the second out of the inning. Kathy Crudo tied the game at two with an RBI single. Angelo State took the lead back in their half of the third. Macy Baker singled with one out. Megan Pumphrey singled after a force out. April Haywood then singled in the third run of the game for Angelo State.

Winona State scored a single run for the third consecutive inning with a run in the top of the fourth. Amanda Wilhelm, Mollie Bjelland and Kayla Lewis had back to back to back singles after two out to tie the game at three after three and a half innings. Angelo State continued their scoring in the bottom half of the fourth. Sandy James and Laura Lopez singled after one out before Macy Baker hit a three run homer to deep left center field to put the Rambelles back into the lead 6-3.

Laura Lopez added an insurance run for Angelo State with a home run in the bottom of the sixth.

April Haywood improved to 18-4 on the season. She gave up 13 hits in a complete game effort. Haywood struck out 3 and walked two. Stacey Struzynski suffered the loss. She went all 6 innings and gave up 13 hits. Struzynski struck out 4 and walked 1.

Angelo State advances to take on Alabama Huntsville in game 12 of the tournament on Sunday at 2 PM. Angelo State will need to defeat Alabama Huntsville twice on Sunday to advance to Monday's championship game.
