May 22, 2010
LOS ANGELES - Senior Megan Langenfeld hit a pair of home runs and sophomore Andrea Harrison's bases-loaded single with one out in the bottom of the seventh scored freshman B.B. Bates to give the fifth-seeded Bruins a 4-3 win over San Diego State on Saturday at Easton Stadium.
The Bruins improve to 42-11 on the season and will play in the Regional Championship game on Sunday at 12 p.m. The Aztecs fall to 34-15 and will face the winner of the Saint Mary's/Fresno State game later Saturday night at 6 p.m.
Langenfeld had a perfect game at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks. The Bruins had six hits as a team.
Sophomore Aleah Macon moved to 9-1 on the year, striking out five in seven innings and allowing three runs (two earned), eight hits and two walks.
The Aztecs got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the second. Eva Sahatdjian led off with a single to right and was pinch-run for Roshana Lavery, who advanced to second when Monica Alnes reached on a UCLA error following a bunt attempt. Patrice Jackson then singled to center to load the bases for San Diego State. One out later, Jen Wisneski grounded a ball up the middle. Junior GiOnna DiSalvatore dove to her right and flipped to junior Monica Harrison at second for the force on Jackson, but Lavery came home to score the game's first run.
After stranding two in both the first and second innings, the Bruins tied it up on one swing in the third. With one out, Langenfeld crushed a 1-1 pitch over the trees beyond the right-field fence for her 15th homer of the season.
In the top of the fifth, Macon got out of a jam with some solid defense. Wisneski singled to left to open the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice by Felicia Reifschneider. Jessica Camello then reached on an infield single to short to put a pair on base, but Macon snagged a line-drive comebacker off the bat of Brittany Knudsen and threw to first to double off Camello to end the inning.
Langenfeld struck again in the fifth with two outs, as she lasered a 1-2 pitch that just cleared the right-field wall for her 16th bomb of the year to make it 2-1.
In the sixth, sophomore Samantha Camuso extended the Bruins' lead to 3-1, belting her 10th homer of the season to center on a 1-1 pitch with two outs.
The Aztecs rallied to tie the game with two in the top of the seventh. With one out, Ashley Rose was hit by a pitch and was pinch-run for by Traci Wolf. One out later, Kristin May walked and was pinch-run for by Lindsey Marquez. San Diego State then tied the game, as Camello doubled to left to plate both pinch-runners to make it 3-all.
In the bottom of the seventh, UCLA got an infield single to short by Bates, who moved to second on a sacrifice by DiSalvatore. Monica Harrison followed with a walk and Langenfeld was walked intentionally to load the bases. The Bruins then walked off with the victory, as Andrea Harrison chopped a single off the tip of the first baseman's glove to score Bates and give UCLA the win.
