Pacific West Athletic Conference
QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. - Dixie State was picked by the league coaches as the favorite to win the Pacific West Athletic Conference title, the PWC announced Tuesday.
Dixie State earned 74 votes to edge 2010 NCAA national champion and last year's conference titlist Hawaii Pacific by one vote in the predicted order of finish. Both DSC and HPU received four first-place votes, with Grand Canyon receiving the remaining first-place vote and 67 total votes for third.
Also announced at the same time was the preseason all-conference team with five Red Storm players receiving accolades: Senior shortstop Ashley McFarland, a 2010 second-team All-PacWest member; junior third baseman Kelsey Mendenhall, a 2010 first-team All-PacWest member and 2009 second-team first baseman; senior catcher Breanna Egge, a 2010 first-team All-PacWest member and a 2009 second-team selection; sophomore utility player Johnna Brown, a 2010 second-team All-PacWest member; and Red Storm pitcher senior Brittnie Whipple Miller, a 2009 second-team All-PacWest member.
The depth of the squad will be the strength of the Red Storm, which returns nine players who saw significant action last season.
