ULL tops Sun Belt coaches poll
Coaches hand Cajuns 8 of 9 first-place votes
LAFAYETTE, La. -- No.17/21 Louisiana-Lafayette was picked by the league’s nine coaches to win its 10th regular-season Sun Belt title. ULL received eight of the nine first place votes while 2010 runner-up FIU grab the other. ULL received 80 points while FIU garnered 69. Troy was third with 55 points, just edging past North Texas (54) and Florida Atlantic (53).
Louisiana led the league with four preseason All-Sun Belt selections. Junior pitcher Ashley Brignac, senior first baseman Gabriele Bridges, sophomore shortstop Nerissa Myers and junior outfielder Christi Orgeron all grabbed preseason All-Sun Belt honors.
Brignac returns after missing the 2010 season due to injury. The junior right-hander will look to return to her 2008 form when she helped lead the Cajuns to an NCAA Women’s College World Series berth. She struck out a season-high 15 batters in the opening game win against then-No.1 Florida in Oklahoma City. During 2010, she was named Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year, first team NFCA All-Region and Sun Belt Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
Bridges started all 63 of ULL’s games last season on her way to leading the Sun Belt with 17 home runs. Her 55 RBI were one behind Orgeron for the team lead and for tops in the Sun Belt. Bridges was named Sun Belt Tournament MVP and Baton Rouge Regional MVP. She was also named to the second team All-Sun Belt team.
Myers started 60 games in 2010 as a true freshman. She was named to the Baton Rouge Regional All-Tournament team thanks in large part to her game-winning RBI in a 1-0 win against LSU.
Orgeron was a NFCA first-team All-Region and second-team All-Sun Belt pick a season ago after posting a .307 batting average and 15 home runs. Her 56 RBI led the Cajuns and was tops in the Sun Belt. She had 15 multiple RBI games, including seven with at least three RBI and five with at least four RBI.
