No. 19 Louisiana cruises to victory
Rajin Cajuns have won 13 consecutive home games this season
LAFAYETTE, La. -- Nineteenth-ranked Louisiana cruised to a 9-1 win against Troy on Sunday at Lamson Park. The six-inning win clinched a series sweep for the Cajuns (26-5, 5-1) as they begin their longest layoff of the season.
With the win, the Cajuns moved to 13-0 at Lamson Park this season.
Shelbee Rodgers (7-2) picked up the win, throwing five innings, giving up just one run on five hits with three strikeouts. Ashley Brignac threw one scoreless inning for the Cajuns in the Sun Belt win.
Christi Orgeron led the Cajuns with three hits, all for extra bases, with four RBIs. The Cajuns, as a team, had nine hits compared to Troy’s six.
UL would jump on the Trojans early, scoring four runs on six hits in the first inning. Nerissa Myers, Gabriele Bridges and Orgeron led off the inning with three base hits, with Orgeron’s being a two-RBI triple.
Sarah Draheim delivered an RBI single through the left side that scored Orgeron and advanced Brianna Cherry, who earlier reached on a bunt single, to third base. Cherry would then score on an RBI single by Megan Granger to put the Cajuns up 4-0.
Troy (19-15, 1-5) would get one run back in the third inning, but the Cajuns defense did a good job to limit the damage. The Trojans led off the inning with two singles and an RBI double by Nikki Hollett to score the run and put runners on second and third with no body out.
However in two pitches, the Cajuns escaped further trouble. Hayden Gann lined into a double play to Myers at shortstop to retire the runner at second base, and on the very next pitch, Sarah Harris grounded out to Myers and the Trojans left the top of the third inning with a 4-1 lead.
UL would get the score back in bottom of the inning when Orgeron hit her 14th home run of the season, a solo shot over the right-center field fence that gave Orgeron 54 RBIs on the season.
The Cajuns would put the game away in fourth inning, scoring three runs with just one hit and three Trojan errors to take an 8-1 lead. Troy's Ashlyn Williams (8-9) walked two batters and hit two in the inning. Erikka Murphy got the only hit of the inning for UL.
The Cajuns will be idle until Wednesday, April 6 when FIU comes to town to start a three-game Sun Belt series.
