Cowgirls finish sweep of Red Raiders
Graham's two home runs power Oklahoma State to victory
Stillwater, Okla. -- Cowgirl sophomore Amy Graham hit a pair of home runs and freshman Simone Freeman struck out 14 Texas Tech batters as No. 19 Oklahoma State defeated the No. 25 Red Raiders 7-1 here Sunday afternoon at the Cowgirl Softball Complex.
OSU scored all the runs it needed in the bottom of the first inning on three consecutive hits. With two outs, Alysia Hamilton doubled to right field and scored on a base hit by Chelsea Garcia, who then scored on a base hit to left field by Julie Ward. Ward's hit broke an 0-for-12 slump that spanned four games and was her 40th RBI of the season.
Texas Tech cut the lead in half in the top of the second when Cydney Allen hit a home run to left center. It was the only hit Freeman would allow in the game as she retired 15 consecutive batters until the seventh inning when she hit Mikey Kenney with a pitch.
Freeman's 14 strikeouts are a career best and tie for the second-most since 2003. Jessica Hoppock struck out 17 batters in a game against Central Arkansas on April 3, 2007, and Anna Whiddon had 14 Ks against Florida Gulf Coast on March 20, 2010.
The Cowgirls did more damage in the fifth. Graham led off with her second home run of the game, her third of the season and the fifth of her career. It also tied the school record for home runs in a game. Three more hits, an illegal pitch by reliever Ashley Brokeshoulder and another error by the Red Raiders plated three more OSU runs.
Brittany Talley started in the circle for Texas Tech and gave up seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits in four innings, falling to 13-4.
Freeman improved to 9-5 with the win, allowing just the one home run while walking none. She faced just 23 batters, just two over the minimum.
