Emporia State shuts out Angelo State
Hornets avenges three tournament losses to the Rambelles
WICHITA FALLS – No. 17 Emporia State got a one hitter from Karley Schmelzer on the way to a 1-0 win against No. 21 Angelo State in the first round of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional 1. The win avenges three consecutive losses by the Hornets to the Rambelles in the last two NCAA Tournaments.
Emporia State got its lone run in the third inning. Angela Mahan reached base and was able to advance to second on a error by the Rambelle shortstop. Jessica Brewer pushed a bunt past the infielders to set up runners at first and third. Brewer was then called out for leaving early. Abby Hughes laid down a squeeze bunt and Mahan was able to beat out the throw home to score the only run of the game.
Schmelzer flirted with a no hitter through the first 5.1 innings before giving up a double to Molly Spearman. She came back to strikeout Kaycee Taylor and get Alix Dean to pop up to end the inning. She retired the side in order in the seventh to send ESU into the second round. Schmelzer gave up the one hit, with four strike outs and three walks.
