Bloomsburg wins Atlantic 2 Regional
Huskies top Bobcats, advance to Super Regional
BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- Senior Shavaun Fisher threw a complete game five-hitter to lead Bloomsburg to a 2-1 victory against West Virginia Wesleyan in the NCAA Division II Atlantic 2 Regional softball championship game. The Huskies will now advance to next weekend's super regional against an opponent to be determined.
The Bobcats got on the board first when Alex Whisner singled, stole second and scored on a two-out double by Kashillia Young's long double to center field. It was the first run for the Bobcats in 15 innings of play up to that point against Bloomsburg. Fisher worked out of the jam getting a strikeout of Dana Goguen.
The Huskies took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Mandy Leach led off with a double to center and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jenna Hampton. Lori Neyhard then lined one to right scoring Leach with the tying run. Emily Young then drilled a ball off the fence in center for a double with Neyhard moving to third. Raychelle Kuhns then hit a deep fly to right field that easily scored Neyhard with the go-ahead run.
In the fourth inning the Bobcats loaded the bases, but Fisher worked out of the jam. With one out Young reached on a bad hop single with Goguen following with a long single off the fence in left field. After Kaitlyn Carey walked to load the bases, Fisher struck out Elizabeth Derrick looking on a 2-2 pitch for the second out. Fisher then went 3-0 on Paige Cummings before getting two strikes. After Cumming fouled off a pitch, Fisher threw one on the corner of the plate for a called third strike to end the threat.
In the fifth the Bobcats put two runners on base with two outs, but Fisher fanned Young for the third out. Bloomsburg closed out the game with Fisher getting two week ground ball outs then ended the game with a soft liner back to her for the third out.
Bloomsburg is now 33-7 on the season, while West Virginia Wesleyan ends the year at 48-8 with three of the losses coming to Bloomsburg.
