Shepherd dominates Luther hitters
Patriots score lone run in fifth to move into winner’s bracket
SALEM, Va. -- Stacy Shepherd threw a complete-game two-hit shutout to lead Texas-Tyler to a 1-0 win against Luther in the Patriots' first game of the 2011 NCAA Division III Championship at the Moyer Sports Complex.
The Patriots (39-11) advance to take on Linfield at 4 p.m. EDT Saturday. The top-ranked Wildcats were 10-0 winners against SUNY-Cortland earlier in the day.
Shepherd didn't allow a single walk on the afternoon while striking out four. She held Luther hit-less through the last four innings of the game.
The only run of the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Jessie Bross singled up the middle to open the inning and Brittanni Hanna put down a sacrifice bunt to move Bross to second. After Brittney Batten struck out pinch hitting for Lauren Robenalt, Joey Cronin popped up to shallow left field, which should have ended the inning. Instead, two Norse infielders misplayed the ball because of the wind, allowing it to drop and giving Bross time to cross home.
Hanna went 2-for-2 for the Patriots, including her 17th double of the season. Kelsey Kittleson and Mallory Broderick combined for the Norse's two hits.
Ace Lexy Determan took the loss for the Norse, just her third of the season. Determan threw six innings, allowing one earned run on five hits and two walks. She struck out four.
