FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Eighth-ranked Salisbury opened up its 2012 regular season at the Methodist Early Bird Tournament with an 8-1 victory against Piedmont on Friday afternoon.

Erika Brittingham (1-0) went six innings striking out six batters and allowing one hit, earning her first win of the season. Brittingham also contributed in the batter's box hitting a two-run home run in the second inning en route to finishing the day 2-for-2 at the plate.

Earlier in the second inning, Michelle Gravdahl sent her first homer of the season out of the park with a three-run blast. Gravdahl also picked off a Piedmont base runner, throwing a cannon to first base for the out.

Salisbury's (1-0) first baseman Harley Hill also had an impressive day at the plate going 3-for-4 and driving in two runs in the process.

Kathryn Larson relieved Brittingham in the seventh inning and retired the side in order to preserve the victory for the Sea Gulls.

Salisbury was leading Roanoke 5-0 in its second contest of the day but the game was suspended in the sixth inning due to rain. The Gulls and Maroons will resume play on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 10:00 am ET.
