No. 24 Tampa sweeps pair of games
Spartans knock off Mary in opener, down Wilmington in finale
CLERMONT, Fla. -- No. 24 Tampa (12-3) swept a Sunday afternoon double-header against Mary (3-4) and Wilmington (1-1). The Spartans topped Marauders 3-2 in the opener before downing the Quakers 10-0 in the finale.
Deanna Henriott started and earned the win for the Spartans to improve her record to 7-2. Henriott hurled seven innings while recording 17 strikeouts and was tagged with two earned runs.
Tampa scored one run early in the third inning when Meagan Burke lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, which scored Susan Jallo for the first run of the game.
In the seventh inning with UT trailing 2-1, Tampa rallied for two runs. Kayleen Boatwright and Burke each contributed RBI base hits during the inning. Boatwright finished with three hits and one RBI, while Burke had one hit with two RBI.
Kayla Cox started game two for the Spartans, which Tampa won in six innings. Cox improved her record to 6-1 by throwing six innings and recording 13 strikeouts while allowing just two hits on the afternoon.
The Spartans were active on offense in the second game, as 10 different batters recorded base hits. Stacy Piagno and Jallo contributed greatly to the effort. Jallo had three base hits and one run scored, while Piagno had two hits and three RBIs.
Pinch-hitter Megan Paul ended the game on a walk-off double to right center, which would give the Spartans a 10-0 run-rule victory in six innings.
