Shenandoah gets upset win in tourney
Hornets defeat No. 7 Salisbury, shut out Baruch in Beach Blast
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Unranked but unbeaten Shenandoah opened play Friday at the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast with a pair of victories, most notably a 6-5 victory against No. 7 Salisbury.
SU banged out 13 hits in the victory against the Sea Gulls (5-1), including a huge pinch-hit two-run double from sophomore Kaitlin Robinson in the bottom of the sixth.
After Salisbury tied the score at 5-5 by scoring three runs with two outs in the top of the seventh, Shatora Lane stepped up in the bottom of the frame with her third hit of the game to drive in the game-winning run.
The Hornets had loaded the bases with nobody out on a hit-by-pitch and two singles to set up Lane for her game-winning single to left.
Coble again had two hits, Lane drove in three and Denise Mitchell was 2-for-3 with a home run.
Senior Brooke Over (2-0), who came on in relief of junior Amanda Litwin to start the third, gave up five hits and struck out four in the final five innings to earn the win.
She gave up five hits.
Shenandoah's other win Friday was a 10-0 victory against Baruch. The Hornets had 13 hits, with sophomore Heather Sink leading the way by going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI.
Morgan Coble had three hits with co-captains Lane and Lauren McCabe adding two each.
