CSU-DH picks up pair of big wins
Toros improve to 20-0 at home in twinbill sweep of No. 4 CSU-DH
CARSON, Calif. -- Juniors Lauren Harper and Stephanie Jimenez each picked up their 13th wins Saturday as 18th-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills took a pair of league games from fourth-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay in 4-1 and 8-0 (6 inning) wins on Toro Diamond.
With the wins, the Toros move back to the top of the CCAA and improve to 27-6, 18-4 CCAA, while keeping their home record perfect at 20-0. The Otters fell to 22-6 and 14-4 in league action.
In the opener, NFCA National Player of the Week Cori Reinhardt got the Otters on the board first with a home run off Harper in the second inning. The Toros took the lead for good in the third with three runs, the big blows coming on RBI extra base hits by Veronica Vazquez (double) and Jessica Hall (triple), before a Christina Chavez RBI single completed the scoring.
CSUDH added a single run in the sixth on freshman Alyssa Cruz's first home run of the year over the left field fence to complete the scoring.
Harper did the rest in improving to 13-4, fanning 12 batters without a single walk, scattering five hits and the one earned run in the win.
The nightcap was a pitcher's duel between Jimenez and Kylie Linnane until the bottom of the fourth, when the Toros took control of the game with six runs. In the frame, the Toros managed just two hits including a Cruz two-RBI double, but benefited from an Otter error, two hit batters and two wild pitches to take a 6-0 lead.
CSUDH put the game away two innings later after Vazquez tallied another RBI to score Khryssi Steele, who began the inning with a double. A Brittany Brenner bases-loaded walk to make it 8-0, ending the game via the run rule.
Jimenez was sensational in her six innings of work in improving to 13-1, fanning five batters against zero walks, facing just one batter over the minimum 18 required for a 6-inning game.
