Incarnate Word tops Texas Woman's
Seventh-seeded Cardinals advance in Lone Star tournament
DENTON, Texas -- Seventh-seeded Incarnate Word utilized a hot start to upset No. 2 seed Texas Woman’s by a score of 5-1 in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Championship at Pioneer Field.
The Cardinals built a five-run lead in the first two innings, which was all the support starter Briana Sanchez needed as UIW avenged three losses to the Pioneers during the regular season.
UIW (27-23) moves on to face Midwestern State (26-24) in the semifinals on Saturday.
In the first inning, the Cardinals scored three runs off four hits for the early lead. Ashley Freeman got the offense on track with a double to start the game. Sarah O’Brien, Lea Padilla and Monica Acuna followed with RBI hits.
UIW tacked on two more runs in its next at-bat with two hits and a TWU error. Freeman led off again in the second frame with a single, before Lea Padilla notched her second hit with a two-run single.
In the fourth inning, TWU recorded its first hit and lone run courtesy of Addison Staley, who tripled down the left-field line. Tiffany Weise plated her with a single to center field.
Sanchez (16-10) earned the win with a five-hit complete game effort.
During the game, the Pioneers Bailey Vrazel broke the LSC single season steals record. The sophomore recorded her 75th stolen base, which broker her own mark set in 2011.
TWU dropped to 36-15 on the year.
