No. 19 Coe upsets No. 4 Luther
Simon yields just two hits, fires shutout to lead Kohawks
DECORAH, Iowa -- Sometimes all it takes is one hit. A stellar defensive performance by Coe on Thursday led to a victory against Iowa Conference regular-season champion, No. 4 Luther, 2-0 in the IIAC Tournament.
Luther and Coe combined for just three hits, as two of the top pitchers in the country squared off in the winner's bracket of the Iowa Conference Tournament. Coe's two runs came at the aide of two Norse errors.
The Norse looked to strike first in the third inning as Elisa Smith singled to right field with one out. A sacrifice bunt moved her to second before she was stranded to end the inning. Luther again looked to score in the fifth as Mallory Broderick doubled with one out, but was left on second.
Coe took advantage in the sixth inning. Brandi Haight singled to left field to start the inning. With Anna Corkery pinch running for Haight, Callie Morningstar reached on a throwing error by the pitcher, as Corkery advanced to third. Brianna Hull then reached on a throwing error by the third baseman, as both Morningstar and Corkery scored.
Luther had runners reach base in both the sixth and seventh innings, but couldn't get them past first base.
Ashlee Simon improved to 19-5 on the year with the complete game shutout. She gave up just two hits, while striking out eight.
Coe opened the day and the tournament with a 3-2 victory in 8.0 innings as the Kohawks scored the winning run on an error. With one out in the eighth, Danielle Scholtterbeck hit a come-backer to the pitcher, who sailed the ball into the outfield on a throw back to second, allowing Amanda Hovind to score.
