Augustana (S.D.) races by Winona St.
Spanton's two extra-base hits power Vikings to easy victory
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- No. 2 seed Augustana (S.D.) defeated No. 3 seed Winona State 6-1 in the Central 2 Regional semifinals on Saturday and will play in the championship game Sunday. Augustana improved to 50-10 while WSU fell to 43-11.
Ashley Meyer (26-3) threw 5.0 innings and allowed just one run on four hits. She also struck out five with no walks allowed before Durland threw the final 2.0 innings and retired all six batters she faced.
Lindsay Spanton shined for the Vikings in the field and at the plate, notching three assists and one put out at third base while going 2 for 2 with four RBI on a 3-run home run and a double. Spanton also drew one walk in the contest. Theresa McMahon also had an impact from the plate after going 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored.
The Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the first when McMahon led off the game with a double, moved to third on Jenny Brown's sacrifice bunt and scored when Elizabeth Murray hit a deep sacrifice fly to center field.
McMahon singled to start the third inning and moved to second on a wild pitch during Murray's at-bat. After Jenelle Trautmann drew a walk, Spanton drove a 1-2 pitch over the center field fence to put the Vikings up 4-0.
WSU got one run back in the fourth after Kathy Crudo was hit by a pitch. After Brittany Stewart singled, Crudo was able move to third and come home on an error during the play.
The Vikings added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth after Brown led off with a single and moved to second on Murray's sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Spanton singled up the middle and Brown was able to beat the throw at home.
Augustana's final run came in the sixth when Matley Jones led off with a double to left center and Taylor Kapsch came in to pinch run. Chelsey Durland then laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved Kapsch to third. Chelsi Winskowski grounded out to second in the next at-bat, but the ball was hit hard enough to allow Kapsch to come home.
