INDIANAPOLIS – On 10 hits and five runs, Illinois-Springfield defeated No. 4 Indianapolis for the first time this season with a 5-1 victory Saturday to advance to the Midwest Region 1 final. The Prairie Stars will play Northern Kentucky Sunday in the championship game.
After four shutout innings from both teams, a double by Danielle Abbott broke the tie and gave the Prairie Stars a one-run lead.
Mandy Smith stepped to the plate and singled down the left field line to bring Abbott home. Smith then stole second and scored on an RBI single to center field by Rachel Wood. Brooke Carroll then hit her eighth home run of the season.
UIS took a five-run lead on six hits that cemented the win for the Stars.
The Greyhounds broke the shutout in the seventh, but scored only one run before the Prairie Stars ended the game and advanced.
UIS beat Northern Kentucky 12-9 in the GLVC Tournament, but fell 1-0 to the Norse in the first day of the regional. The Stars must beat the Norse twice to claim the Midwest 1 Region title.
