Green Knights' pitcher Schmidt tosses no-hitter but still loses
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Anderson (Ind.) survived a no-hitter by St. Norbert’s Shannen Schmidt, as the Ravens defeated the Green Knights 1-0 on Saturday in an elimination game at the Bloomington Regional of the Division III Softball Championship. The Ravens scored one run on no hits while St. Norbert was held scoreless despite collecting seven hits. The Green Knights, however, had the one costly error.
Anderson improved to 32-11 while remaining in contention for the regional championship. St. Norbert ends its season with an 18-20 overall record.
Schmidt (11-11) held the Ravens hitless in a complete game. She allowed one unearned run, walked two batters and struck out two.
The lone run of the game came in the top of the second inning as Anderson junior Lauren Smith drew a leadoff walk. She advanced to second base on a sacrifice by teammate Stephanie Atkins on the next at-bat, however Atkins also reached first on the fielder’s choice. A St. Norbert error allowed each runner to advance a base. Smith was thrown out on an attempt to steal home, but Atkins advanced to third base with just one out. Atkins scored on a sacrifice flyout to centerfield by Megan Ream for the only run of the game and the only blemish against the Green Knights’ pitcher.
Anderson starting pitcher Monica Crowe improved to 20-2 on the season, working 5.1 innings in the circle. Crowe held SNC scoreless on seven hits, with two strikeouts and four walks. Smith came in to work 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. She held St. Norbert hitless, with no walks and one strikeout to close the door and give Anderson the win.
St. Norbert shortstop Steph Brunette was 2 for 4 for the Green Knights. Samantha Gross was 2 for 4 as she and Brunette accounted for four of St. Norbert’s seven hits in the game.
