UNC curbs Georgia Southern in extras
Scarboro draws a hit-by-pitch to walk in the winning run
ATHENS, Ga. -- Lori Spingola tossed eight innings of one-run ball and Jordan Scarboro drew a hit-by-pitch to walk in the winning run, as No. 21 North Carolina edged Georgia Southern 3-2 at Jack Turner Softball Stadium Friday afternoon. Haleigh Dickey also tallied a RBI in the win against the Eagles as the Tar Heels improve to 42-13 on the season.
Ally Blake lined a two-out single through the right side in the bottom of the first inning, but Haleigh Dickey struck out swinging to strand her at first base.
Amber Parrish drove a one-out double to right center field in the bottom of the second frame and Chelsey Butler came into pinch run for her at second base. Constance Orr fouled out to the second baseman, advancing Butler to third base. Jordan Scarboro struck out swinging, ending the threat.
Marie Fogle hit a one-out single to left field and Mackenzie Williams drew a walk to position runners at first and second base with one out in the top of the fourth. Andrea Tarashuk then ripped a RBI-single up the middle, propelling the Eagles ahead 1-0.
Orr drew a one-out walk and Tisha Mahon came in to pinch run at first base in the bottom of the fifth. Scarboro laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Mahon to second base. Lauren Walker came in to pinch hit for Kelsey Green, but struck out swinging, squandering another scoring opportunity.
Carolina evened the score at 1-1 with a fielder's choice by Dickey to score Wheeler from third base in the bottom of the sixth frame.
The Tar Heels loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning before Jordan Scarboro drew a hit-by-pitch on a 1-0 count from Sarah Purvis (23-11), to walk in the winning run and give UNC the walk-off victory.
